Maurice Bennett '06 was an Associated Press All-American in his senior season of 2005 when he racked up 133 tackles, ranking him ninth in a season in Lafayette history, and led the Leopards to their second straight Patriot League title and FCS Playoff appearance. He was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season and was a national semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy, (the Academic Heisman).
Bennett earned All-Patriot League First-Team honors in 2004 and 2005 when he led the Patriot League in tackles. He helped guide Lafayette to a pair of Patriot League titles and NCAA Playoff berths, the first two playoff berths in the program's history and finished his career with 403 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss and 15 sacks.
He served as the team captain and was the MVP of the 2005 squad, which finished ranked 20th in the final poll after losing to eventual national champion Appalachian State in the NCAA FCS First Round. That 2005 team was ninth in the nation in total defense and Bennett was 10th in the nation for tackles and linebacker sacks, respectively. The 2004 team ended 18th in the final poll and lost to reigning national champion Delaware in the NCAA FCS Playoff First Round.
After graduating, Bennett participated in the Chicago Bears rookie camp, and later entered the business world.Â
